Method

  1. Soak the chickpeas overnight or for at least 6 hours.
  2. Drain the water and rinse the chickpeas.
  3. Add the chickpeas to a pressure cooker and add enough water to cover them.
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the chickpeas are cooked.
  5. Heat oil in a frying pan and add cumin seeds.
  6. Add finely chopped onions and fry until they are translucent.
  7. Add ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute.
  8. Add tomato puree and fry until the oil separates from the mixture.
  9. Add coriander powder, garam masala powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
  10. Add the cooked chickpeas along with the water and mix well.
  11. Cook for 10-15 minutes on medium heat or until the gravy thickens.
  12. Add butter and mix well.
  13. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with naan, roti or rice.

Notes

  • You can also use canned chickpeas instead of dried chickpeas. If using canned chickpeas, skip step 1 and 2.
  • You can adjust the spices according to your taste.
  • If you do not have a pressure cooker, you can cook the chickpeas in a pot on the stove. It will take longer to cook, around 1-2 hours.
