Method
- Soak the chickpeas overnight or for at least 6 hours.
- Drain the water and rinse the chickpeas.
- Add the chickpeas to a pressure cooker and add enough water to cover them.
- Add 1 teaspoon of salt and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the chickpeas are cooked.
- Heat oil in a frying pan and add cumin seeds.
- Add finely chopped onions and fry until they are translucent.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute.
- Add tomato puree and fry until the oil separates from the mixture.
- Add coriander powder, garam masala powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
- Add the cooked chickpeas along with the water and mix well.
- Cook for 10-15 minutes on medium heat or until the gravy thickens.
- Add butter and mix well.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with naan, roti or rice.
Notes
- You can also use canned chickpeas instead of dried chickpeas. If using canned chickpeas, skip step 1 and 2.
- You can adjust the spices according to your taste.
- If you do not have a pressure cooker, you can cook the chickpeas in a pot on the stove. It will take longer to cook, around 1-2 hours.
